1. Check your resting heart rate (RHR) after you have been sitting quietly. Take your pulse for 30 seconds and multiply by 2.
2. Determine the heart rate reserve (HRR). This is done by subtracting the resting heart rate from the maximal heart rate HRR = MHR – RHR. The target heart rate indicates the number of beats available to go from resting conditions to an all-out maximal effort.
3. Calculate the target heart rate (THR) at 60% and 80%. Multiply the heart rate reserve by the respective 60% and 80%, and then add the resting heart rate to these two figures. THR = HRR x .60 + RHR.
4. Example: The 60% and 80% target heart rates for a 20-year-old person with a resting heart rate of 68 beats per min is:
MHR: 220 – 20 = 200 beats per minute (bpm)
RHR = 68 bpm
HRR: 200-68 = 132 beats
THR = (132 x .60) + 68 = 134 bpm NOTE: This is your heart working at 60% intensity.
